Internet Browsers: Safe and Secure
My first article was on privacy, which is in short supply these days. There are increasing reports of data breaches and leaked info of users from various applications and websites. The most recent privacy problem is with Zoom, the app which has suddenly skyrocketed to the top. "Zoombombing" is a common issue people are facing and also the bad encryption had in general. The stand of different companies are contrasting and no one seems to arrive at a good enough policy which might earn back the confidence from people. With the current lockdown situation the usage of internet is at a all time high. The most common thing people use to browse the internet is an web browser. There are many reports claiming privacy issues in many browsers and lack of features or basic functionalities in many others. People may argue that whichever browser they use might not be secure. My counter statement would be to at least use ones that have better privacy features than others. In this regard iOS and MacOS users are in a better place than their Android and PC counterparts.
The default browser in Apple devices, Safari is a good browser with regard to privacy although it may lack in some functionalities. Apple always brags about its privacy policy and how it is their primary concern to preserve their user data. They seem to have a pretty good encryption and they do not store any user's data with them(unencrypted). They also stood by their word when they refused to unlock an criminal's iPhone for the FBI. Even though the FBI eventually unlocked it themselves, at least Apple didn't help them with it. They also released a statement about how the loophole which helped the FBI unlock into the iPhone had been fixed. I might sound like an Apple fanboy but all the things they have done with regards to privacy have been far better than their competitors.
Things on the Android side are a bit topsy turvy; Many brands with their own strategies and different forms of software. Google has been trying hard the past few years to improve security on Android. They introduced Play Protect in the Google play store to provide extra layer of security. Though they may have ended on the wrong side of privacy related issues, they have been trying to amend things the last few years. People are still skeptical of Google's promises with regards to privacy and security but there is still hope that the whole situation will improve for the good of all people.
Still to those people who prefer browsers other than Chrome, there are many good alternatives with better privacy, security and features.
1. Brave browser
2. Firefox
3. Microsoft Edge
The above mentioned browsers are also available for macOS, Windows and iOS.
I have mentioned the top three browsers I think are the best as far as I haved used and heard about from experiences of many tech youtubers. You may be using browsers apart from what has been mentioned here but do give these a try and compare them with the browsers you currently use to use the one that best suits your requirements. Using the same web browser in all your devices helps in workflow continuity and also helps in organizing bookmarks easily.
Hope you find this article useful and Happy Web Surfing!!!
I'll add the links to the above mentioned Web Browsers
