Are frequent upgrades necessary for tech?
The rise in the rate at which technology is evolving is a good and a bad thing at the same time.
The availability of various new tech and features make it eye catching for the consumers, but are those features really necessary is the big question.
Consumers are generally influenced by the advertisements of various brands which showcase many features that are not quite essential. This in turn influences the choices made by consumers while buying their devices. In most cases the advertisements are misleading and can result in a bad buying decision. All these factors result in people opting for frequent upgrades even when they aren't necessary. The best example for the tech that people upgrade very frequently are smartphones.
Smartphones have evolved from being just communication devices to a pocket computer which can do almost anything that an conventional computer can do. This has drastically reduced the increased dependency on computers for simple day to day tasks. Smartphones have also replaced many digital cameras with their superior features and increased mobility.
With all these advancements smartphones have reached a certain saturation point. Now smartphone manufacturers have turned to improving the currently available features with high end hardware which were a dream in the past. The right example would be the arrival of 64 Megapixel camera sensors in smartphones by 2020.So the industry is flooding the market with many devices with very high calibre devices. These advancements may be necessary, but that doesn't mean frequent upgrades are needed to be made by consumers to get their hands on the latest and greatest. The buying choices must be decided by the basic and essential requirements. The primary thing while buying a phone should be the duration for which one is planning to use it. Higher the price longer the duration and better features. The average life cycle of phone is around 4-5 years. Annual or Biannual upgrades are advised for cheap phones or when the person really requires the upgrade. The recommendation for best phones for long term use may be done by choosing the following:
i) Good display ii) Good Cameras iii) Software support for a minimum of 3 years iv) Good build quality v) Good service network/support vi) Personal requirements( for eg; iOS or Android)
Most times people may not need such frequent upgrades but do so upon seeing others upgrade to new tech which is generally not necessary. The use of latest tech doesn't make someone superior but the effectiveness with which the technology in general is used determines a person's proficiency.
